     ------------------------------------------------------ NICHOLAS FIRFIRES ------------------------------------------------------

Nicholas Firfires, BUCK JONES 7, (BUCK JONES # 7)

Nicholas Firfires, THE IRON HORSE TRAIL, (FOUR COLOR # 299) - This was a Buck Jones adventure.

  Nicholas Firfires, WARRIOR 18, (back-cover of LITTLE BEAVER # 4) - A Plains Indian, part of a pin-up series.

Nicholas Firfires, BUCK JONES 6, (BUCK JONES # 6)

  Nicholas Firfires, INDIAN PIN-UP, (back-cover of LITTLE BEAVER # 3) - Part of a pin-up series.

Nicholas Firfires, [title unknown], (BUCK JONES # 2)

Nicholas Firfires, [title unknown], (BUCK JONES # 4)

Nicholas Firfires, [title unknown], (BUCK JONES # 5)

     ------------------------------------------------------- MORRIS GOLLUB -------------------------------------------------------

Morris (Mo) Gollub, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 29)

Morris (Mo) Gollub, SAC AND FOX WARRIOR - WARRIOR 1, (back-cover of LONE RANGER # 21) - This was the first of a long running pin-up series.  One trusted source evaluated this as a Gollub piece, which is crucial as I've then based my idenitification of all the following ones (that are in the same style) on that.

Morris (Mo) Gollub, THUNDER MOUNTAIN, (FOUR COLOR # 246) - presenting an adaptation of Zane Grey's novel of that title.

Morris (Mo) Gollub, LANDSLIDE, (back cover of FOUR COLOR # 246 (back cover)) - a painting on the back cover presented with no 'trade dress' whatsoever, presumably an illustration from Zane Grey's Thunder Mountain contained within.

Morris (Mo) Gollub, TRIGGER & SALMON, (back cover of ROY ROGERS' TRIGGER # 2 (back-cover)) - a nice painting of Roy Rogers' horse Trigger, presented just like this on the back cover of this comic - the first of Trigger getting his own titled series (the '#1 comic is actually FOUR COLOR # 329).

Morris 'Mo' Gollub, [title unknown], (SERGEANT PRESTON OF THE YUKON # 11) - When this original art came to auction, it was identified there as Gollub's.

Morris (Mo) Gollub, DANIEL BOONE, (FOUR COLOR # 1163) - "Pioneer - Hunter - Indian Fighter - He blazed a trail for others to follow !" - I've seen a Gollub scholar, Robert Barrett, ID'ed this work as that artist's

Morris (Mo) Gollub, THE NIGHT RAIDER, (MARCH OF COMICS # 187) - An adventure featuring Indian Chief.  At least one Gollub-researcher touts this as that artist's work.

Morris (Mo) Gollub, TAPPAN'S BURRO, (FOUR COLOR # 449) - Comic adatation of the Zane Grey story.

Morris (Mo) Gollub, SILVERTIP AND THE VALLEY THIEVES, (FOUR COLOR # 789) - An adventure of Max Brand's hero Silvertip adapted from the book Valley Thieves

Morris (Mo) Gollub, WILDERNESS RANCH, (ZANE GREY'S STORIES OF THE WEST # 33) - "A picturized edition of 'Man Of The Forest'"

Morris (Mo) Gollub, [title unknown], (FOUR COLOR # 460) - A Buck Jones adventure

Morris (Mo) Gollub (only my own attribution), ALMIGHTY VOICE, (back-cover of LONE RANGER # 23) - Illustration with accompanying short piece about 'The Last Indian Battle', detailing Almighty Voice's evading capture & ultimate death.  The piece identifies Almighty Voice as being a Blackfoot Indian, but it seems he was actually Cree.  I'm ascribing it to Gollub because it is in the same style as most of the indian Warrior pin-up series, the first of which is attributed to him, as well some of the others that are tentatively so.

     ------------------------------------------------------ HANK HARTMAN ------------------------------------------------------

Hank Hartman, RANGE WAR, (FOUR COLOR # 555) - "A picturized edition of 'The Hash Knife Outfit'" - Comic adaptation of the Zane Grey story.

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER'S COMPANION TONTO # 4)

Hank Hartman, THE SPANISH MINE, (FOUR COLOR # 591) - Further adventures of Ernest Haycox's Western Marshal hero, Dan Mitchell.

Hank Hartman, LONE RANGER 71, (THE LONE RANGER # 71)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 69)

Hank Hartman, GOTCHA, (THE LONE RANGER # 68) - I had seen this attributed to Don Spaulding, but in the 1990s, Hartman recreated this image (now entitled GOTCHA) so as to produce limited-edition prints of it and signed the new painting with his name.  It is the recreation that we are featuring here.

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 73)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 75) - You can see that the background of the original art was altered before publication.

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 96)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 92)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 77)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 95)

Hank Hartman, AROUND THE CORNER, (THE LONE RANGER # 65) - In the 1990s the artist recreated this image (now entitled AROUND THE CORNER) so as to produce limited-edition prints.  It is this image that we are featuring here.

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 94)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 66)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 91)

Hank Hartman, [unknown title], (THE LONE RANGER # 93)

Hank Hartman, INCIDENT AT THE LONE RANGER'S MINE, (THE LONE RANGER # 99) - "Ruthless outlaws stalk the Lone Ranger to his secret mine !"

Hank Hartman, AMBUSH AT BRYANT'S GAP, (THE LONE RANGER # 103) - "Ambushed at Bryant's Gap !"

  Hank Hartman, DAN REID'S SECRET HIDE-OUT, (THE LONE RANGER # 104) - "Dan Reid's secret hide-out"

Hank Hartman, RED FOR DANGER, (THE LONE RANGER # 107) - "Read: 'Red For Danger' !"

Hank Hartman, THE LAWLESS GOLD TOWN, (THE LONE RANGER # 108) - "The Lawless Gold Town"

Hank Hartman, FIGHTING CARAVANS, (FOUR COLOR # 632) - "They rolled west with loaded guns . . ." - Comic adaptation of the Zane Grey story.

Hank Hartman, SILVER BULLETS, (THE LONE RANGER # 106) - "Read: 'Silver Bullets' !" - I had seen this attributed to Don Spaulding, but a website established by the artist's family clearly identifies it as one of Hartman's

     ------------------------------------------------------ Robert Maguire ------------------------------------------------------

Robert Maguire, JURY OF SIX - "His gun delivered justice to a killer who laughed at the law" - The Signet paperback release of this western by Matt Braun ("bestselling author of The Kincaids").

Robert Maguire, SEVEN WAYS FROM SUNDOWN - "Blood was boiling in the tough western town--and gunman Jim Flood had come to spill it !" - The Pocket Books paperback release of this western by Clair Huffaker ("author of The Cowboy And The Cossack").

Robert Maguire, BELLE STARR - This was the title that was provided when this canvas came to auction, but what use it was put to has not yet been determined here.

Robert Maguire, THE WOMAN WHO RODE AWAY - "The Woman Who Rode Away And Other Stories" - The Berkley paperback release of this collection by D.H. Lawrence.

Robert Maguire, MATTIE SILKS - The Pocket Books paperback release of this tale by Matthew Braun ("the bestselling author of The Kincaids").  The artwork was also later utilized on a foreign publication, the title of which translates to 'Hard West'.  Maguire's painting was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY (that first cover is featured as well, juxtipositioned with the reference model photographs).

Robert Maguire, TWO GUN OUTLAW - "Dave Moore plunged into an inferno of fighting men and flaming lead !" - The Paperback Library release of this western by Burt Arthur ("author of Black Rider").  I've also added right here a volume from Danish publisher 'Texas Books', which is their own translation of Wayne D. Overholser's A Gun For Johnny Deere, which has the same image on the their cover - the very metholdical website, bookscans.com, says they've determined that the image is *not* a re-use of Maguire's art, but rather a fully executed recreation, right down to his signature.  Maguire's painting was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

Robert Maguire, CODE OF THE WEST - "The city-bred wife of rancher causes violence and revenge when she scorns the Code Of The West" - The Cardinal Books (Pocket) paperback release of this classic western by Zane Grey.  Note that on the cover of a later edition of this tale, Maguire's piece was re-worked to be slightly more abstract.

Robert Maguire, CHEYENNE AMBER - "Could she repay him with her heart ?" - The Harper paperback release of Catherine Anderson's frontier romance.

Robert Maguire, INDIGO BLUE - "A heartwarming adventure which will touch each and every one of the emotions." - The Harper paperback release of Catherine Anderson's western romance (another in her 'Comanche' series).

Robert Maguire, CALICO PALACE - "Breathless romance!  Gold Rush excitement!" - The Pocket Books paperback release of Gwen Bristow's historical novel.

     ------------------------------------------------------- VIC PREZIO -------------------------------------------------------

Vic Prezio, THE DESERT DESPERADOES - Berkley's 1959 release of Nelson C. Nye's western.  The same art was then used years later as the cover of German publisher Bastei Lübbe's release of G.F. Unger's Einsamer Kämpfer [Lonely Fighter].  Prezio's signature is clear and this painting came up for auction amid a wealth of his materials.

Vic Prezio, WAR WAGON (PAPERBACK COVER VERSION) - Futura's 1975 release of Clair Huffaker's western classic.  While a major motion-picture had been made seven years before, starring John Wayne & Kirk Douglas, it's unknown why this cover sports the clear likeness of Charles Bronson.  See WAR WAGON (FINAL VERSION) for what I believe is a paint-over to create a slightly different visage for Bronson.

Vic Prezio, DESOLATION RANGE - "The Masked Rider moves into a valley swarming with outlaw killers..." - The Curtis paperback release in their Masked Rider western series by Donald Bayne Hobart (reprinted from the pulps).  Prezio's signature seems to be able to be made out.

Vic Prezio, FREMONT, (REAL MEN 1959-Jan) - "Bonus Novel--Fremont: trailblazer of the American frontier // Sex Clubs Are My Business // Madame Of The M.V.D.--The She-devil who directs Soviet sin and sabotage! // Love Potions That Theaten Your Life !" - This cover art seems to be associated with this story.  Prezio's signature is clear.  This painting was featured in STEVE HOLLAND-COWBOY.

Vic Prezio, SCALP HUNTING HARLOTS OF THE CHEROKEE STRIP, (REAL MEN 1959-Apr) - "Scalp hunting harlots of the Cherokee Strip // Illicit love . . . financed by Uncle Sam" - Perhaps the contents page can confirm that we've identified the right item this image illustrates.  Prezio's signature is clear.

Vic Prezio, [unknown title] - It's not yet determined what use this was put to.  Prezio's signature is clear.

Vic Prezio, DAY OF THE HANGMAN, (SHAWN STARBUCK # 20) - "Only Starbuck could stop the senseless lynching, and save Yucca Flat from disaster and destruction ..." - Signet's paperback release of Ray Hogan's western from his Shawn Starbuck series.  Prezo's signature is clear.

Vic Prezio, YOUNG MEDICINE MAN - Used as the dustcover for Lantern Press's release of Francis Lynde Kroll's juvenile western (part of their Young Heros series).  Note that all interior illustrations are by Charles H. Geer.  Prezio's signature is clear, and this painting was part of a lot consigned to auction by the artist's family or descendants.

Vic Prezio, THE GENTLE GUNMAN - "Valdivia wanted the man, so he bought his horse.  In one stroke of double dealing, he got them both !" - The Warner Books paperback release of Max Brand's western.

Vic Prezio, HENRY STARR, (REAL MEN 1958-Sept) - "Henry Starr...The West's Most Incredible Outlaw! // 'I Bathed In Blood!' // The PX That Peddled Women! // Exposing America's most respected racketeer...The Crooked Dentist" - Prezio's signature is clear.

Vic Prezio, TERROR IN EAGLE BASIN - "Once the deadliest of lawmen, he'd turned his back on violence...but now he was forced to buckle on his guns again" - The Signet paperback release of this story by Cliff Farrell.  The art was re-used as part of the volume that doubled this tale with the author's Return Of The Long Riders.

Vic Prezio, ROGUE'S RENDEZVOUS - Ace's paperback release of the western by Nelson Nye ("Spur Award-winning author of The Long Run").  Prezio's signature is clearly present, though I've seen some confusion ascribing this to Robert McGinnis.

Vic Prezio, THE HARDEST MAN IN THE SIERRAS - Wraparound cover for Ace's paperback release of L.P. Holmes's western.

Vic Prezio, TRAIL OF THE FRESNO KID - Ace's paperback release of Ray Hogan's western.  Prezio's credit on this cover may have confused things, resulting in a possible mis-identification of him being the one providing the cover to the earlier Ace-Double release of the same western novel.

Vic Prezio, A THROWN RIDER - The auction-house that sold this recently titled it "A Thrown Rider", but one imagines that that is a created title by them, in light of the unknown use.  I would hazard that it is a preliminary for a paperback yet un-identified.

     ------------------------------------------------------ SAM SAVITT ------------------------------------------------------

Sam Savitt, WINNER TAKE ALL - Savitt did numerous paintings for Dell Comics's western titles including those devoted to the 'celebrity' movie-horses.  While this piece would fit right in with those, it seems to be a work he created for the 'fine-art' market.

Sam Savitt, CROSSROAD TRAILS, (GENE AUTRY AND CHAMPION # 117) - "Champion's own story 'Crossroad Trails'" - Original art has floated about the web for some time now, credited to Sam Savitt
